Mike E. Raphtis, M.D.
Dr. Mike E. Raphtis is an ophthalmologist, eye surgeon, and the Medical Director here at the Balian Eye Center. Dr.Raphtis specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye-related conditions and diseases. He was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa where he completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Iowa. Dr. Raphtis’ residency and surgical training was completed at Rush Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Raphtis was first recognized nationally for his surgical expertise in 1994 when he placed first in the America College of Eye Surgeons Residents Videotape Competition for Cataract Surgery. He was also recognized as one of the “Top Doctors” and “Best Physicians” as chosen by peers in Southeast Michigan. Dr. Raphtis joined Balian Eye Center in 1994 and became Medical Director in 1995. In addition to his role as Medical Director, Dr. Raphtis have also served as a surveyor for the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) since 1996. AAAHC is the leader in developing standards to advance and promote patient safety, quality care and value for ambulatory surgery centers through peer-based accreditation processes, education and research.
Lastly, Dr. Raphtis has served on the medical staff of Crittenton Hospital Medical Center since 1994 and William Beaumont Hospital since 1996 and has been a clinical Assistant Professor for Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University since 1997. Additionally, Dr. Raphtis has served as a Clinical Preceptor for Wayne State University Family Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Educator since 2008.
